MARIN COUNTY WATER SYSTEMS

Water is supplied to Marin county by several separate systems.

SOUTH and CENTRAL MARIN
The Marin Municipal Water District (MMWD) serves southern and central Marin communities along the eastern coast.

NORTH MARIN
The North Marin Water District (NMWD) serves Northern Marin, primarily Novato and surrrounding areas.

MISCELLANEOUS
Several small companies supply water to West Marin communities. Wells and minor collections systems supply individual farms.

SUPPLY VERSUS DEMAND STATUS
Water shortages in the past and projections of future needs has caused most of these systems to explore various methods to increase their supply by:
Increasing reservoir capacity,
Increasing conservation,
Seeking new sources, including increased importation, increased recycling and desalination of sea water.

SCOPE OF THIS WEB SITE
This web site is devoted to a better understanding of the circumstances and options facing MMWD and its water customers.
This is done by providing convenient links to current MMWD plans and publications, by providing summaries of certain types of information from them - such as capacities, uses and energy requirements, and by providing insights to alternatives not presented by them.

LINKS TO MMWD PUBLICATIONS
The MMWD has conducted a number of activities over the past few years, including consideration the capacity demand, the current supply capability, and ways to increase it - including by desalination. They have published on the web several descriptive documents, listed as follows.

Merely click on the highlighted title to view these documents.

MMWD Home Page
A good starting point for all their operations, capacity, rates, conservation, etc.

Water Supply and Demand
A thorough explanation of the current supply-demand position, their past efforts to increase capacity, and future options.

Desalination Engineering Report
A detailed engineering report on the proposed desalination facility and related cost information. (This is a very large file, which may require substantial downloading time. You might choose to not go there unless you really want detailed information.)

Desalination Enviromental Impact Report
The link is to a summary page having separate links to the individual chapters in the detailed Invironmental Report on the proposed desalination facility.
