Decision Process

To decide whether to allow automatic joining with MEA or taking the trouble to Opt-Out you must decide upon your primary motives - and their relative importance to you. In doing so it is suggested that you click on each of the menu items on the left of this page to learn more specifics about each aspect of this subject.

SUBJECTS	FAVORING AUTOMATIC ENROLLMENT in MEA	FAVORING OPT-OUT to stay with PG&E ELECTRICITY GENERATION
Global Warming	Claims faster conversion to renewable electricity	MEA RECs only use other peoples renewable electricity and do not reduce CO2 production until new renewable facilities are actually built and put into production. PG&E large hydro units far exceed MEA renewables
Cost	Protection against long term increase of fuel prices	Advances in technology have decreased fuel costs.
Private vs Government	Just don't like or trust PG&E Disliked their tactics in opposing formation of MEA Local control	Just don't think government should be in electrcity generation business, especially when governed by the same local politicians that gave us the government employee pension problems. MEA not regulated by CA PUC like PG&E
Local Jobs	Good for small local installations	Small local installations can not provide the necessary electricity, requiring construction of large scale facilities in locals with more favorable solar and wind resources. Avoid problems with NIMBYS (Not in my back yard)
Technology Choices	Favors small distributed systems	Only large scale facilities can economically compete
Personal	Government mandated auto enrollment unless Opt-Out	Should have been Opt-In to allow freedom of choice without pressuring.

Those are a lot of factors to think about and carefully consider as you decide whether to Opt-Out or merely allow yourself to be automatically enrolled by the MEA.
Everyone will not have the same motives, and everyone will not make the same decision.
